Goal:
Raise $6 million dollars in 3 years. With the City matching these contributions on a 4-to-1 basis the result will be $30 million dollars worth of capital improvements for the Zoo. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a long term rebuilding project for the Honolulu Zoo.
The Zoo has announced receiving many large contributions including 1 million dollars from the Harold K. L. Castle Foundation, $250,000 from Dr. Mark Bogart, $150,000 from the Atherton Family Foundation, $100,000 from the McInerny Foundation, $100,000 from the Cooke Foundation, $100,000 from Sandy and Michael Hartley and an anonymous donation of $100,000.
For every dollar donated, the city is adding $4 toward the project and the funds will go toward improving the Zoo. Projects include:
-
A Discovery Zone to
include an education building, amphitheater,
Keiki Zoo and the Rainforest Adventure Camp Playground.
Update: The Keiki Zoo is being constructed. See photos of the groundbreaking ceremony and read the newspaper articles. Completion is expected by early 2006. In addition, the classrooms for the new education complex have been approved and we hope that they will be available for the Summer of 2006 programs. -
The Animal Health
Center, providing a new in-house, state-of-the-art veterinary clinic
that will also serve as a quarantine center for new animals.
Update: The new veterinary clinic, on the Paki and Monsarrat corner of the zoo is now completed. See the November 2005 dedication photo gallery. -
The Hawaiian Island
Experience, featuring native animals, plants and culture.
Update: Society funded new 'Io or Hawaiian Hawk exhibit. See article by Zoo horticulturist. -
A new entrance to create a visually compelling atmosphere.
Update: The new entrance has been approved and construction is expected to start in early 2006.
