Earth Day Celebration at the
Honolulu
Zoo
"Earth Day 2008 – Party for the Planet"
along with
hundreds of Zoos across the nation.
-
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-are hosting this nation-wide celebration – Party for the Planet - to help visitors become aware of the various environmental issues facing our communities. The Zoo staff will be focusing on frogs as 2008 has been declared Year of the Frog as frogs and amphibians across the world are facing the possibility of a mass extinction. This has not been seen since the time of the dinosaurs.
Amphibians are affected by habitat loss, climate change, pollution and pesticides, introduced species, and over-collection for food and pets. The most immediate cause of the amphibian crisis, however, is a parasitic fungus called amphibian chytrid, a disease that is deadly to hundreds of amphibian species. Global climate change may have accelerated the problem. Currently unstoppable and untreatable in the wild, the fungus can kill up to 80 percent of the native amphibians within months.
The mission of the Honolulu Zoo is to inspire the stewardship of our living world by providing meaningful experiences to our guests. The Zoo emphasizes Pacific Tropical ecosystems and our traditional values of malama (caring) and ho'okipa (hospitality).
